Blackie No More

Reading Kenny Ng’s blog reminded me of something that happened eons ago….something that I cried buckets of senseless tears over. Well, not really senseless but….yeah, you’ll get what I mean.

Used to stay in my in-law’s place and there’s this really huge, big, ferocious-looking labrador roaming the yard. He looked like he could wolf you down but actually, he is the kind of canine who really likes a scratch.

Anyway, he’s old and he’s always sick. His ass is growing worms and maggots, he can’t hear and one eye’s popped. Gosh, it’s sad just to look at him. He wobbles around to you when you call ‘Blackie…’ and much of what we gave him for food is left uneaten. He looks as if he would like to eat it but didn’t have the energy to chew.

One morning, I woke up, fed the, then very young Joshua, walked downstairs and saw two strangers walking into the compound. One of them had a big black bag. They were talking to Blackie and stroking his head while my in-laws hovered around in the back.

One of them continues talking and stroking to the poor dog while the other one walked over to the bag and opened it. I saw that it contained a lot of bottles….medicine? I stood at the doorway curiously. Blackie is sick again? Wah-lau, so many times this month already! The man with the bag took out his shringe and walked over to Blackie from behind. With one man stroking his head and talking to him and one man injecting him, Blackie lifted his head up a little as if wondering who poked him in the ass. Then slowly, he put his head down again, as if sighing.

He looked sleepy. His eyes started drooping. It was strange but his tongue was slipping out of his mouth. It struck me ONLY THEN that they were putting Blackie to sleep. I slapped my hand over my mouth and smothered a scream! I was watching a murder. Well, not really but……

But the strangest thing was that as Blackie’s head lolled sideways and ended with a dead thud against concrete, I thought he was smiling. I couldn’t stop the tears from rolling down my cheeks and asked Joshua to go the kitchen. There…..it was done.

Strangely, as sad as I was, I think Blackie would have thanked my in-laws for ending his misery. Goodbye Blackie, I thought as the doctors stood up and congratulated themselves for a job well done.

Very sorry to hear that, sigh… another sad case for an animal force to put to sleep. May Blackie RIP.

I would thank your in laws too if I were in Blackie’s place…

After thinking about it for a while, I knew it was the right thing to do….but stilll……human beings have such power over animals….it’s just….very disturbing, you know. I am very sensitive to these type of things, that’s why. cannot tahan

Marsha, I think that was the right thing to do. Blackie was obviously suffering.
My dad had to take our pekingnese to the Vet to be put down as he had a growth from his behind and was infested with worms even though my mum cleanse the wound endlessly.
