I got tagged by Mamasbagoftricks a LLLOOONNNGGGG time ago and procrastinated like nothing else but this is an interesting tag because I am on a very strict diet right now, so, this should test my resistance towards awesome local food. I tell you, as far as food is concerned, Penang Island is my H.E.A.V.E.N. I go Penang and I end up breaking every single rule about proper nutrition, health, balanced diet…blah blah blah. Penang rocks!
And I have a couple of favorite local food…and they’re all from Penang! Hee hee hee…. There’s the ‘har kow chee cheong farn’ which is nothing but chee-cheong-farn with prawn paste on top! Totally unappetizing for foreigners, I suspect but to me, it’s a simple non-fatterning food (I think)! The strong ’stench’ from the prawn paste can be a big turn-off for the unassuming.
Then there’s the Penang Asam Laksa! You ain’t tasted Asam Laksa the way it should be until you’ve eaten one in a Penang stall! Sure, we have a lot of stalls here promising us Penang-flavored Asam Laksa but no way, man. None of them comes close!

And my favorite food in the world, bar none, is….the PRAWN MEE! It’s no cuisine but I tell you, give me Penang Prawn Mee and I am totally yours!
I know ‘Champs’ serves up Prawn mee closest to what I want and the portion is enormous. Can fill-up three tummies! But expensive lah. Come to think about it, when’s the last time I had prawn mee ah? Ok-lah, set. Tomorrow, I go and ta-pau prawn me!
So, seriously. What’s your favorite local dish?
I am not going to tag anyone. If you want to share your fave local food, feel free to comment down there or let me know where your post is on your blog!

I absolutely love prawn mee as well. I have not found anyone who sells prawn mee like the mobile peddler that used to come around our house twice a week around 9.30pm. Sometimes even as tired as I was, I would force myself to stay up just to have his prawn mee. That was like 34 years ago!
I want that prawn mee you’ve got there.

Your penang chee cheong fun is the same one with mine, right? with the hair-ko, rite? I don’t like nasi kandar….SO OILY!!! And CHAR-KUEY TEOW!
I agree Penang is still the champ when it comes to quality hawker stall food.
I was in a simple Mamak restaurant in Dato Keramat about 2 months with my string quartet(penangs’ Dato Keramat..not KL one!) and tried their mixed Indian rice. Wow…cant believe how good the mutton, curry and what nots were!!
Tried the infamous Mcalister Char Kueh Tiau too. Nice but over rated lah, to me. NOthing so special to me.
tried their supposedly best Penang Assam Laksa…nice! nice!
Thick gravy…full flavours…some more got one small sardine for your mouth to chew on!
You can find another killer Assam laksa in OUG. It’s different…but personnaly I still like the OUG one…though the Penang one is not lousy at all either!

Ya, man. Nowhere else comes close to Penang, man. Not even Jalan Alor. Mcalister Char Kueh Tiau? No wor. I believe you know where to find good food, Killerguy.
I just had prawn mee at Mee Yoke Lim (former Cheow Yang) with added intestines. Not too bad, at least the soup wasn’t insipid and the sambal was decent. But there’s still room for improvement. So where is the Kepong baru place Jamie is raving about??

I heard a friend also like to go Chow Yang to eat. Have not been there ever since my Form 6 SEApark schooling days.

Wahaha! Yessir…Penang’s Prawn Mee is really good. Here we call it Hokkien Mee la.. and the best that you can get is from the Pulau Tikus market (Just in case any of you decide to come to Penang)! It’s so good that it is sold out by 10am! The aunty’s a bit stingy with the soup sometimes but then again, it’s delicious!
Marsha, Judy, come to Penang this weekend, I’ll be home!!
***
Wah…you know Judy stay where or not??? Fly here just for Hokkien Mee? Don’t know whether she’s willing to or not, actually. You spend ar?
